More Help for Finals, part 4

Six grade: Divide these fractions and/or mixed numbers.
14. ¾ ÷ 1/3 = [A] 2 –¼ [B] ¾ [C] ¼ [D] 4
** Keep-Change-Flip. That makes this 3/4 x 3/1 = 9/4 or 2-1/4. A is correct answer.
15. 2/3 ÷ 2/3 = [A] 1 [B] 4/9 [C] 9/4 [D] 6/4
KCF. 2/3 x 3/2 = 6/6 or 1. A is correct answer.

Seventh Grade:
51. x/10 = 3/5 A] 150 [B] 6 [C] 1.5 [D] 16.67
**Cross multiply. 5x = 3 x 10, 5x = 30, divide by 5-- x = 6 Correct answer is B.

52. 12/8 = a/6 A] 9 [B] 16 [C] 4 [D] 12
**Cross multiply. 12 x 6 = 8a, 72 = 8a. Divide by 8-- 9 = a. Correct answer is A.

More Help for Finals, part 3

Sixth Grade: True or False
__ When multiplying fractions, you simply multiply numerator to numerator, and denominator to denominator. (TRUE)
__ There are three yards in a foot. (FALSE. There are three FEET in a YARD.)

Seventh Grade:
Find the Greatest Common Factor of each set of numbers.
11. 18, 27 A) 2 B) 3 C) 6 D) 9
** The prime factorization of 18 is 3 x 3 x 2
The prime factorization of 27 is 3 x 3 x 3
The factors are 3 and 3. Therefore the GCF is 3 x 3 or 9. "D" is the correct answer.
12. 30, 72 A) 2 B) 3 C) 6 D) 9
** The prime factorization of 30 is 3 x 5 x 2
The prime factorization of 72 is 3 x 3 x 2 x 2 x 2
The factors are 3 and 2. Therefore the GCF is 3 x 2 or 6. "C" is the correct answer.

Pre-Algebra:
Is the following relation a function?
{(2,3),(1,4),(3,2),(2,5)}
To be a function, each member of the domain (x coordinate) must be paired with only one member in the range (y coordinate). The number 2 is paired with both 3 and 5, so it is NOT A FUNCTION.

What is the slope of a line passing through the following points? Q(2,10), B(4,6)
The slope formula is y2 - y1/ x2 - x1. Simply plug in the values for x and y, and calculate the slope. So 10 - 6/2 - 4 = 4/-2 or simply -2. M= -2.

Algebra:
15p > 60 You must solve for p, so divide both sides by 15. New inequality is p> 4

d/-13 > -5 Since d is divided by -13, we must multiply by the same number. When you multiply or divide by a negative number, you must flip the inequality sign the other way. So your answer is d < 65.

More Final Exam Help, part 2

For Algebra Students:

3x - y = 1
2x + 4y = 3
Use substitution to solve this system of equations.
3x - y (+ y) = 1 (+ y) add y to both sides
3x = 1 + y
3x (- 1) = y + 1 (- 1) subtract one from both sides
3x - 1 = y
Substitute this for y in the other equation.
2x + 4(3x - 1) = 3
2x + 12x - 4 = 3 use Distributive property
14x -4 = 3 combine like terms
14x = 7 add four to both sides
x = 1/2 divide by 14
3(1/2) -y = 1 substitute 1/2 for x
3/2 - y = 1 multiply 3 times 1/2
- y = -1/2 subtract 3/2 from each side
y= 1/2 divide by -1
ANSWER: (1/2, 1/2)

x - 5y = 0 multiply this by 2
2x - 3y = 7
2(x- 5y) = 0 2x - 10y = 0
subtract 2x - 3y = 7
-7y = -7
divide by -7 y = 1

x - 5(1) = 0 substitute 1 for y
x - 5 = 0 multiply
x = 5 add five to both sides.
answer: (5, 1)

More Final Exam Help

This is for the Pre-Algebra students.

5. 15 < 5n, n = 3
Substitute the value of n,which is 3, into the inequality.
15 < 5(3)
15 < 15 Answer is FALSE.
9. 2(n – 5) = 8 [A] 9 [B] -9 [C] -1 [D] 1
To solve, you must use the distributive property, so 2 x n and 2 x -5 make the equation 2n-10 = 8.
2n - 10 (+ 10) = 8 (+ 10) Add ten to both sides
2n = 18
2n ÷ 2 = 18 ÷ 2 Divide both sides by 2
n = 9

Extra Help for Final Exams

You found it. I mentioned in class that you could find extra help here for the Final Exam. Here it is:

6th Grade Can you solve these?
1. ¾ + 1/8 =
[A] 1 [B] 5/8 [C] 7/8 [D] 12/16
**These fractions must have the same denominator. The LCD is 8, so you must multiply the top and bottom of 3/4 by 2. The resulting fraction is 6/8. 6/8 plus 1/8 equals 7/8. The correct answer is "C."
2. 2/5 + 1/6 =
[A] 3/11 [B] 2/30 [C] 5/30 [D] 17/30
**Again change into the LCD, which is 30. Multiply 2/5 times 6 on the top and bottom and you will get 12/30. Multiply 1/6 by 5 on the top and bottom and you will get 5/30. 12/30 + 5/30 = 17/30. So the correct answer is "D."

7th Grade Can you solve these?
Write each percent as a fraction in simplest form.
20. 68 % A) 68/100 B) 34/50 C) 17/25 D) 6/8
**Re-write 68 percent as 68/100. Remember, you can REDUCE that fraction by dividing the top and bottom by 4. The result is 17/25. The correct answer is "C."
21. 95 % A) 9/5 B) 19/20 C) 49/50 D) 95/100
**Re-write 95 percent as 95/100, then reduce. The result is 19/20. The correct answer is "B."
